Seed Phrase, Private Key and Password: What Is the Difference?
Understand what each credential controls and why a seed phrase must never be treated like a normal website password.
A Password Protects an Account
An exchange password usually protects one platform account and may be reset through email, identity checks or support. A leak is serious, but the platform may still freeze access. It is not the final ownership credential for on-chain assets.
A Private Key Controls an Address
A private key can sign transactions and move assets from its address. Anyone who obtains it can control the funds, and blockchain transfers are generally irreversible. Never send it to support, projects, airdrop sites or recovery services.
A Seed Phrase Can Restore the Wallet
A seed phrase often derives and restores many addresses and keys, so its authority can exceed one private key. Enter it only in a trusted wallet recovery flow, preferably offline. Never screenshot, cloud-sync or paste it into a website for “verification.”
