How the Ethereum Gas Fee Calculator works

Estimates the ETH and USD cost of common Ethereum mainnet actions by multiplying gas units by a gas price taken from EIP-1559 fee history or a manual Gwei value. Use it to budget transfers, swaps or mints before you send them.

Formula

Cost (ETH) = gas units × gas price (Gwei) / 10^9; cost (USD) = ETH × ETH price. Live gas price = latest base fee + median 50th-percentile priority tip over the last 20 blocks (eth_feeHistory).

Worked example

ERC-20 transfer, 65,000 gas at 2 Gwei: 65,000 × 2 = 130,000 Gwei = 0.00013 ETH. With ETH at 3,000 USD, cost = 0.00013 × 3,000 = 0.39 USD.

How to read the result

  • Fees scale linearly with both gas units and Gwei.
  • A large gap between the estimate and the base fee means priority tips are high.
  • Preset gas units are typical values; complex contract calls vary.

Limits and cautions

  • Actual gas units depend on contract, route, token and state; simulate in your wallet.
  • L2 data-posting fees and bridge charges are not included.
  • The base fee changes every block, so the estimate can move quickly.

Common questions

How much gas does an ETH transfer cost?

A simple ETH transfer uses 21,000 gas. Cost = 21,000 × gas price in Gwei / 1e9 ETH; at 2 Gwei that is 0.000042 ETH.

What is a Gwei?

One Gwei is 10^-9 ETH. Gas prices are quoted in Gwei per unit of gas.

Why did my wallet charge a different fee?

The gas your transaction actually used, the base fee of the block it landed in and the priority tip you set all differ from this estimate. Under EIP-1559 the unused part of the max fee is refunded.
