Perp DEX Showdown: Hyperliquid vs dYdX vs GMX — Which to Choose

CryptoRebateHub Editorial Team

Three very different on-chain perp models — order book, app-chain, and oracle-priced pools. Mechanics, fees, and who each suits.

On-chain perpetuals (perp DEXs) have exploded, but their underlying mechanics differ a lot. Understanding that is how you know which to use.

Three models, three roads

PlatformPricingRuntime
HyperliquidOn-chain central limit order book (CLOB)Own L1 (HyperBFT)
dYdX (v4)On-chain order bookOwn Cosmos app-chain
GMXOracle pricing + multi-asset liquidity pools (GLP/GM)Arbitrum / Avalanche

Hyperliquid: the order-book experience closest to a CEX — deep books, low slippage, ideal for active and high-frequency traders. Its own L1 makes gas negligible.

dYdX v4: migrated from an Ethereum L2 to its own Cosmos chain; also an order-book model, highly decentralized with strong community governance — though liquidity and listing speed are worth watching.

GMX: no order book; traders take the other side against a liquidity pool, with prices fed by oracles. Upsides: long-tail assets, LP-friendly. Downsides: oracle latency, different slippage/funding mechanics, and a history of oracle-arbitrage issues.

Fees & experience (reference)

  • Hyperliquid: taker/maker ≈ 0.035% / 0.01%, the most CEX-like feel.
  • dYdX: tiered fees, good order-book UX.
  • GMX: fixed bps open/close fee plus borrow fee — suits longer-term traders who don't care about book depth.

How to choose

  • Want the closest thing to Binance's book and speed for active/HF trading → Hyperliquid (our code HYPEKR gives a 4% fee discount).
  • Value pure on-chain governance and the Cosmos ecosystem → dYdX.
  • Want to trade long-tail assets or LP for fees, indifferent to book depth → GMX.

Shared risks: all are leveraged derivatives — leverage amplifies risk; all need a self-custody wallet, so key and bridge security are on you; oracle/contract risks vary by platform. Beginners: low leverage, stop-losses, and test with small size first.

For reference only, not investment advice.
