Bitcoin vs Ethereum: What Is the Real Difference?

CryptoRebateHub Editorial Team

From purpose to supply to tech to investment profile — a full comparison of crypto two giants

BTC and ETH dominate most of the crypto market, but they are two entirely different things. Understanding the difference is key to rational allocation.

Different purpose

  • Bitcoin: digital gold. Aims to be a store of value — scarce, secure, censorship-resistant "hard money."
  • Ethereum: a world computer. Aims to be the base platform for decentralized apps (DeFi, NFTs, smart contracts).

Different supply mechanism

  • BTC: fixed 21 million cap, purely deflationary by design; scarcity is the core narrative.
  • ETH: no fixed cap, but via a burn mechanism (EIP-1559) plus staking, it can be net-deflationary during high activity.

Different technology

  • BTC: Proof-of-Work (PoW), secured by mining — most secure but energy-intensive. Relatively simple (focused on transfer and storage).
  • ETH: switched to Proof-of-Stake (PoS) in 2022, secured by staking — more efficient, and supports complex smart contracts.

Different investment profile

  • BTC: relatively lower volatility (within crypto), preferred institutional allocation, clear "digital gold" narrative.
  • ETH: combines "store of value" and "productive asset" traits (staking yields), tied to the entire DeFi/app ecosystem, with greater elasticity.

How to choose

  • Value stability and store-of-value → weight BTC more.
  • Believe in the long-term value of the smart-contract ecosystem → allocate some ETH.
  • What most people do: hold both, BTC-primary, ETH-secondary (see "core-satellite" allocation).

The core It's not "which is better" but "they solve different problems." BTC is digital gold, ETH is digital oil — they can coexist.
