Why ETF flows are the marginal price-setter

Price is set at the margin. A day of net ETF inflow forces issuers to buy the equivalent BTC in the spot market (in-kind creation/redemption) — rigid demand, indifferent to crypto-native sentiment. At peaks, a single day’s net inflow has equalled several times the day’s newly mined supply — the daily gap between miner issuance and ETF demand is, in a sense, this cycle’s hardest supply-demand ledger.

How to read them: three layers

  1. Single-day net for sentiment: big inflows accompany breakouts, but daily data is extremely noisy. 2. Streaks are the signal: two-plus weeks of same-direction net flow has tracked medium-term trend closely; a broken inflow streak flipping into sustained outflow is a more serious turn than any single-day spike. 3. Cumulative holdings for structure: ETFs’ rising share of circulating supply means traditional capital’s pricing power is structurally growing.

The entanglement with exchange reserves

ETF custody (largely Coinbase Custody) prints on-chain as "leaving exchanges", badly distorting the old exchange-reserve metric — falling reserves no longer purely mean retail hodling. On-chain flow reads must isolate ETF custody addresses; hence our repeated rule: trend within one source, never absolute levels.

How they may rewrite the cycle script

ETF money follows rates, risk budgets and advisor-channel rollout — not the halving calendar. That is the core evidence for the liquidity hypothesis in the four-year cycle debate. Plausible structural shifts: long-run volatility compression (allocators rebalance counter-cyclically), narrowing drawdowns (see the convergence in drawdown history), rounded rather than spiked tops. But do not over-romanticise: ETF money panics too — multi-billion-dollar weekly outflows during 2025’s sharp drops proved the pipe runs both ways.
