Altcoin Season Signals: Which Indicators Actually Work?

Altcoin season index, BTC dominance, and quantifying capital rotation timing

"Altcoin season" is when capital flows from Bitcoin into altcoins, causing altcoins to broadly outperform BTC. Identifying the onset is key to improving portfolio returns.

Signal 1: Altcoin Season Index

The Altcoin Season Index measures how many of the top 50 altcoins outperformed BTC over the last 30 days. ≥75% = "Altcoin Season"; ≤25% = "Bitcoin Season." Historically, altcoin seasons typically begin 2-4 months after BTC makes a new all-time high.

Signal 2: BTC Dominance

BTC Dominance measures Bitcoin's share of total crypto market cap. When dominance falls from highs (55%+), it has historically preceded altcoin seasons. Caution: falling dominance can also reflect broad market decline (stablecoin cap rising), not altcoin rotation.

Signal 3: ETH/BTC Ratio

The ETH/BTC ratio is a classic early altcoin season indicator. Ethereum is typically the first stop for rotating capital. When ETH/BTC begins a sustained uptrend, broader altcoin season often follows.

Historical Case Studies

  • Late 2017: BTC dominance fell from 65% → 35%, altcoin explosion
  • April-May 2021: New BTC ATH followed by ETH/BTC new high, full altcoin season
  • Oct-Nov 2021: L1 rotation into SOL/AVAX/LUNA

Practical Guidance: Wait for clear BTC dominance downtrend + Altcoin Season Index > 60 + ETH/BTC uptrend confirmation before rotating into altcoins.
