How the Bitcoin Bull Market Support Band works
Plots the band formed by the 20-week simple moving average and the 21-week exponential moving average on weekly closes, and shows whether price sits above or below the band's upper edge. Use it to judge long-term trend structure.
What you enter
- No controls; hover over or tap the chart to read values.
What it shows
- Log-scale chart of the weekly BTC price, the 20W SMA and the 21W EMA
- Current price (latest weekly close)
- Support band range (lower–upper of the two averages)
- Above upper band (%)
How to use it
- Read the Support band tile.
- Check Above upper band: positive means price is above the band.
- Focus on weekly closes rather than intraday moves.
- Note how long price has held above or below the band.
- Cross-check with the golden cross and RSI charts.
Formula
SMA20 = average of the last 20 weekly closes; EMA21 is seeded with the SMA of the first 21 closes, then EMA = close × k + previous × (1 − k), with k = 2/22. Band = [min, max] of the two; distance % = (price / max − 1) × 100.
Worked example
If the 20-week SMA is 85,000 USD and the 21-week EMA is 87,000 USD, the band runs from 85,000 to 87,000 USD. With price at 92,000 USD: distance = (92,000 / 87,000 − 1) × 100 ≈ +5.75%.
How to read the result
- Weekly closes above the band have characterized past bull phases.
- Losing the band and failing to reclaim it signals weaker trend structure.
- A wide gap between the two averages reflects strong recent momentum.
Limits and cautions
- Moving averages lag and can whipsaw in sideways or turning markets.
- Only real weekly exchange candles from August 2017 onward are used, so earlier cycles are not shown.
- The latest weekly candle may still be forming.
Common questions
What is the Bull Market Support Band?
The zone between Bitcoin's 20-week SMA and 21-week EMA. Traders watch whether weekly closes hold above it as a gauge of the long-term trend.
Why a 20-week SMA and a 21-week EMA?
They weight recent prices differently; together they form a zone instead of a single line, which reduces sensitivity to small crosses.
Is losing the band a sell signal?
No. It indicates weakening trend structure. Many breaks have been followed by recoveries, so holding on weekly closes matters more.
