How the Bitcoin RSI Chart works
Plots Bitcoin's 14-period RSI with Wilder smoothing on daily, weekly or monthly candles, with reference lines at 70 and 30, so you can compare momentum conditions across timeframes.
What you enter
- Timeframe selector: Daily, Weekly, Monthly
What it shows
- RSI14 line for the chosen timeframe with dashed lines at 70 (overbought) and 30 (oversold)
- Current RSI value and zone label: Overbought (≥ 70), Oversold (≤ 30) or Neutral
How to use it
- Select Daily, Weekly or Monthly.
- Read the current RSI value and its zone below the chart.
- Check how long RSI has stayed above 70 or below 30.
- Switch timeframes to see whether they agree.
- Compare RSI peaks with price peaks to spot divergences.
Formula
Change = close − previous close. Initial average gain/loss = simple average of the first 14; afterwards, average = (previous average × 13 + current) / 14 (Wilder). RS = average gain / average loss; RSI = 100 − 100 / (1 + RS).
Worked example
If the Wilder average gain is 2.0 and the average loss is 1.0, RS = 2.0 and RSI = 100 − 100 / 3 ≈ 66.7, in the neutral zone (between 30 and 70).
How to read the result
- Weekly and monthly extremes are rarer and more meaningful than daily ones.
- In strong trends, RSI can stay above 70 or below 30 for a long time.
- Bearish divergence: price makes a higher high while RSI makes a lower high.
Limits and cautions
- Overbought does not mean price must fall; oversold does not mean it must rise.
- The daily view covers only about the last 500 days.
- Weekly and monthly views use exchange candles only, from August 2017 onward, so earlier cycles are not included.
Common questions
What is a good RSI for Bitcoin?
There is no good value; RSI describes momentum. By convention, readings above 70 are called overbought and below 30 oversold, but both can persist.
Daily or weekly RSI: which matters more?
They answer different questions. Daily shows short-term swings; weekly and monthly show cycle-scale momentum and produce fewer, slower signals.
What period does this RSI use?
14 periods of the chosen timeframe with Wilder smoothing, calculated by the site from exchange closes.
