How the Bitcoin Golden Cross & Moving Average Ribbon works
Calculates Bitcoin's 50-day and 200-day simple moving averages from exchange daily closes, flags the most recent golden cross or death cross, and shows the spread between the two averages to describe trend direction.
What you enter
- Range: 2 years, 4 years (default), All
What it shows
- Chart of BTC price, the 50D SMA and the 200D SMA (dashed)
- Current BTC price, 50D SMA and 200D SMA
- MA spread (%)
- Latest cross type (golden or death) and its date
How to use it
- Pick a range: 2 years, 4 years or All.
- Read the Latest cross tile and its date.
- Check the MA spread: positive means the 50-day is above the 200-day.
- See whether price holds above the 200-day SMA.
- Confirm with the bull market support band and RSI charts.
Formula
Spread % = (SMA50 / SMA200 − 1) × 100. Golden cross: SMA50 − SMA200 moves from ≤ 0 to > 0 from one day to the next; death cross: from ≥ 0 to < 0.
Worked example
If SMA50 = 70,000 USD and SMA200 = 65,000 USD, spread = (70,000 / 65,000 − 1) × 100 ≈ +7.69%, consistent with the latest cross being a golden cross.
How to read the result
- A golden cross means medium-term momentum has overtaken the long-term trend.
- A widening spread signals a strengthening trend; a narrowing one, fading momentum.
- Price holding above the 200-day SMA after a cross adds confirmation.
Limits and cautions
- Crosses lag; in strong moves they arrive after much of the move has happened.
- In sideways ranges, crosses can flip back and forth (whipsaws).
- Daily history starts in August 2017, so All begins in early 2018 once 200 days exist.
Common questions
What is a golden cross in Bitcoin?
When the 50-day moving average crosses above the 200-day. A death cross is the opposite. Both are lagging trend confirmations.
Is a golden cross bullish for Bitcoin?
It confirms that recent prices have overtaken the longer trend, but it is not a forecast. Past crosses have been followed by both rallies and reversals.
When was Bitcoin's last golden cross?
The Latest cross tile shows the type and date of the most recent cross computed from daily closes.
